Registration is well underway for the NGFA’s 124th annual convention, which will be conducted in Austin, Texas, on March 8-10. In addition to the annual business meeting, the “Technology and Transportation Open Forum,” and top-name general session speakers, the meeting features several opportunities for members and guests to explore Austin. Additional registration is required for these tours, which offer unique and guided ways to learn, eat and explore this one-of-a kind locale. Available tours are outlined below:
- Best of Austin Food Trucks Food Truck Tour: What started in the early ‘90s as a not-so-humble hot-dog stand has blossomed into a citywide movement. All over town, chefs are eschewing sit-down establishments and serving inexpensive, unpretentious cuisine whipped up in the back of refurbished Airstreams and concession trailers. Officials estimate more than 1,000 mobile food vendors are in Austin. From tasty cupcakes at Hey Cupcake! to Chi’Lantro’s taco-and-Korean barbecue, street eats occupy every niche, and there’s always a new, delicious, fairly priced meal to discover. Food-court trailer parks are an Austin phenomenon in which multiple trailers cluster to create a dining destination. Tour includes four savory stops and one dessert stop, all visiting some of Austin’s favorite mobile eateries! All food and two libations are included. Libations are usually choice of a local beer or hard cider at two of the stops (Wine options can be purchased prior to tour).
- Austin Biker Gang Tour: Form your own electric bicycle group and join a professional road captain on a tour of Austin, covering the city’s landmarks, popular artworks, natural wonders and other sought-after destinations.
- Behind the Scenes Live Music Tour: Go behind the scenes and uncover some of the icons that have given Austin its deserved reputation as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Start with a home-style southern lunch at Threadgill’s, where you’ll eat in their memorabilia-soaked dining room and learn about the great artists who’ve played at the Armadillo World Headquarters. Next you’ll visit the Moody Theater, home to Austin City Limits Live, for a private tour of this incredible super-modern venue. The tour will be led by Scott Newton, the acclaimed 40-year staff photographer, who’ll share anecdotes and experiences from his decades snapping the stars. This tour wraps up with a show at one of Austin’s best-known live music venues (dependent on timing) or a tour of the Gibson Gallery, the premier showroom that features all kinds of Gibson guitars.
- NGFA also is exploring adding a fourth tour – featuring the LBJ Presidential Library on the University of Texas campus. We’ll let you know about this potential new tour ASAP!
