Registration is open for the NGFA’s 124th Annual Convention, which will be conducted in Austin, Texas, on March 8-10. In addition to the annual business meeting and top-name general session speakers, the meeting features a “Transportation and Technology Open Forum” on Sunday afternoon, March 8, focusing on issues at the Surface Transportation Board (STB) and the NGFA’s Barge Digital Transformation Project, among other topics.
The open forum includes:
- “STB Priorities and Freight Rail Forum” featuring Martin Oberman, STB vice chairman. Oberman, the newest member of the agency, will discuss his priorities at the agency and his philosophy regarding federal regulatory oversight of freight railroads. He also will take questions and solicit input from NGFA members on the impact of current rail carrier practices on the ability of agricultural rail shippers and receivers to competitively and efficiently serve domestic and export customers.
- “Barge Digital Transformation (BDT) Project – Update and Product Demo” with Brittany Schaefer, chair of the BDT Steering Committee and logistics manager at Bunge North America, St. Louis, Mo. Schaefer will provide an update on the Barge Digital Transformation project – the initiative launched in October 2018 in response to strong industry demand to replace the current costly, cumbersome and outdated (paper and FedEx- based) process to apply barges and transfer bills of lading. She also will demonstrate a prototype of the electronic platform that will enable companies to transmit documents electronically. The BDT Steering Committee she chairs has spearheaded this industry-driven project, which now is in its final development stages.
