NGFA applauds Senate confirmation of Hedlund to second STB term

ARLINGTON, Va., August 7, 2026 — The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) today welcomed the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Karen Hedlund to a second term as a Member of the Surface Transportation Board (STB).

“Karen Hedlund has been a thoughtful, experienced, and effective member of the Board during a critical period for the freight rail industry,” said NGFA President and CEO Michael Seyfert. “Her confirmation ensures the STB will continue to benefit from her expertise as it addresses important issues affecting the nation’s transportation network and supply chain.”

The STB oversees the freight rail marketplace and plays a vital role in maintaining a competitive and responsive transportation system. During her first term, Hedlund helped guide the Board through significant rail service challenges and brought a valuable perspective to issues affecting rail customers and carriers.

Prior to joining the STB, Hedlund served as Deputy Administrator and Chief Counsel of the Federal Railroad Administration and held other senior transportation policy positions, including Chief Counsel of the Federal Highway Administration. Her extensive experience and balanced approach have earned the respect of stakeholders throughout the transportation sector.

“At a time when the Board is considering matters with long-term implications for freight transportation and the U.S. economy, experienced leadership is essential,” Seyfert said. “We congratulate Karen Hedlund on her confirmation and look forward to continuing to work with her and the Board to support a reliable and efficient freight transportation system.”
